    Benjamin Lauder Nicholson, OM (10 April – 6 February ) was an English painter of abstract compositions (sometimes in low relief), landscapes, and still-life. He was one of the leading promoters of abstract art in England.[1]

    Background and training

    Nicholson was born on 10 April in Denham, Buckinghamshire, the son of the painters Sir William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde, and brother of the artist Nancy Nicholson, the architect Christopher Nicholson and Anthony Nicholson. His maternal grandmother Barbara Pryde (née Lauder) was a niece of the famous artist brothers Robert Scott Lauder and James Eckford Lauder. The family moved to London in Nicholson was educated at Tyttenhangar Lodge Preparatory School, Seaford, at Heddon Court, Hampstead and then as a boarder at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk. He trained as an artist in London at the Slade School of Fine Art between and , where he was a contemporary of Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Mark Gertler, and Edward Wadsworth.     Benjamin Roberts-SmithVC, MG (born 1 November ) is an Australian former soldier[1] who, in a civil defamation trial in he initiated in the Federal Court of Australia, was found to have committed war crimes (including murder) in Afghanistan during , and [2][3][4][5] An appeal to a Full Court of the Federal Court, comprising three judges, commenced on 5 February [6][7][8]

    Roberts-Smith was awarded a Medal for Gallantry in , the Victoria Cross for Australia in , and a Commendation for Distinguished Service in [9][10] After discharge from the Australian Army in , he was granted a scholarship to study business at the University of Queensland. In , he was appointed deputy general manager of the regional television network Seven Queensland and later, general manager of Seven Brisbane until temporarily stepping down in to focus on his defamation action against Nine Entertainment. Following the defamation outcome in , Roberts-Smith resigned from Seven West Media.[11]
