SAN DIEGO SAN DIEGO —
Father Joe Carroll, president of St. Vincent de Paul Village homeless assistance agency, struck two pedestrians Saturday night while driving home in his Crown Victoria sedan. One of the two men was homeless.
An ambulance took one of the pedestrians to a local hospital for treatment. Carroll and witnesses said the man was not seriously injured.
Carroll was not cited by police and was cleared to drive his car to his home, near the St. Vincent de Paul campus at 15th Street and Imperial Avenue.
The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday at 16th and F streets. Carroll said he was driving home from work at the nonprofit’s administrative offices in the 3300 block of E Street in the Stockton community.
He was driving west on State Highway 94 – which turns into F Street – when he took a right on 16th Street after stopping at the light.
“Suddenly I saw two guys in the crosswalk,” Carroll said Friday. “I think I brushed them. I don’t think I hit them too hard.”
Carroll, 67, said he pulled over and waited for police to arrive, standing outside of the Jewel Box Bar and Restaurant. He said one of the men he hit appeared to be fine, and the other complained of pain.
