The Bookbinder by Pip Williams
This beautifully written novel takes place in 1914 Oxford, England, as the men leave for war and the women are left behind to carry on. Peg, a thoughtful young woman working in the bindery of the Oxford University Press, is told to "bind the books, not read them". But she does read them and longs for a future where she can learn from books, just as the girls of Sommerville College do, which Peg sees every day across the street from where she and her sister work. Peg is torn between her ambition, her need to provide for her younger sister and her feelings for a soldier she has come to care for.
I loved this book as the characters were all memorable and worth rooting for. The clash between one's own dreams and responsibilities and what society dictates for you is brilliantly portrayed. All this makes for a highly original story and enjoyable read. ~Mary Hartwig~
