Indian beauty pageant
Miss India, also known as Femina Miss India, is a national beauty pageant in India that selects representatives to compete in the Miss World competition, one of the Big Four international beauty pageants.[1] It is organized by Femina, a women's magazine published by The Times Group.[2][3]
The current Femina Miss India World is Nikita Porwal from Madhya Pradesh. She was crowned by the previous titleholder, Nandini Gupta, on 16 October 2024 in Mumbai.[4]
History
The first Miss India was Esther Abraham, from Calcutta, who won the title in 1947. The pageant was organized by the local press.[5][6]
In 1952, two Miss India pageants were held. Indrani Rehman and Nutan were the winners.[7] Nutan was crowned Miss Mussorie, while Rahman was crowned at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.[8] Rahman later represented India at the first Miss Universe pageant in 1952.[9]
In 1953, Peace Kanwal from Punjab was crowned Miss India at the Kardar-Kolynos pageant, organized by filmmaker Abdur Rashid Kardar. She later became a Bollywood actress.[10][11]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to Gandhi, with an early morning visit to Raj Ghat. Later, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and President Ram Nath Kovind, and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu followed in offering their respects at the samadhi.
